Just Go.

Friday: January 18, 2013
Driving home tonight, casually being blinded from both directions by cars with their SUPER (note the emphasis on super) bright lights on, I realized something. The reason you go to high school dances and football games and rallies isn't because it is "part of the high school experience," it is because you should.

Tonight I went to my first boy's (and well girl's) basketball game. Ever. Being a second semester senior in high school, I find that difficult to do, but I did it. I was mostly there for a friend to watch her part in the girl's basketball game which took place before the boy's, but I stayed and watched with my school spirit student body. I saw a lot of kids I watched around campus earlier today and I couldn't help but think these kids are probably going to college for this. One kid, we will call him Tyler, he is 6'7" tall and my friend said the only thing he couldn't do was jump. I mean he had the height, the skill, but not the jump, and I thought to myself, once he gets that down, he's going to be unstoppable. And then I started thinking about the scholarships to college and the scouters and eventually NBA and I will see him at home on the television and say to my family, "I knew Tyler when we were in high school and when he was hitting his head on the door frames.

So you go to these activities not to blend with the crowd, or to hang out with friends like I originally was, you go because one day, you will be able to see the progress made in everyone, as someone will hopefully see in you. These are your high school years, your last teenage years, and you should be able to hold onto them forever. So many amazing memories were made tonight, and I could not have asked for a better four hours of screaming, cheering, and laughing.
